The Handwriting Lesson
My grandfather has very big hands. But his handwriting is small and beautiful.
He teaches me every Sunday. He gives me an old handbook and a secondhand pen.
"Hold it like this," he tells me. I watch him and I copy him.
Last week he gave me a handout with fifty letters on it. I don't like it, but I do it.
Yesterday I wrote him a letter. I put it in my handbag and carried it up his stairs, one hand on the handrail.
He read it twice. Then he gave me a handshake, like a grown-up. Do you know him? He also plays handball, and he still beats me.
