The bill that was never paid
On a small café table two empty plates wait to be taken away. Mr Blake takes out his wallet.
The waiter shakes his head. “You should keep it.” Mr Blake looks at the bill. It is still unpaid.
The waiter lifts both hands. “No payment today.” He points at an old photograph high on the wall.
In the photograph a young waiter stands next to a younger Mr Blake. Mr Blake looks at it for a long time.
He sits down again. “I should repay you somehow.” The waiter smiles. “You shouldn't. It was a long time ago.”
The bill lies on the table, still folded. Next payday he will pay another customer's bill. Should he tell them who?
