The map that was wrong
A folded map lies on the back seat of the car. Mr Blake follows a line slowly with one finger.
The road turns into dirt and runs on quietly between fields. At the junction there is no sign at all.
He turns the map round carefully and does not read it correctly. The road stops. A lake lies flat and bright in front of them.
The children climb out quickly and run to the water. A wide flat stone of pale limestone stands at the edge.
Mr Blake folds the map neatly and puts it away. All three sit on the stonework of an old wall and put their feet in.
Wet footprints dry slowly on the warm stepping stone. On the way home he writes one line on the map. How often is a mistake a milestone?
